The Blue & Gray Golf Classics are an 11-event, national golf outing fundraising tour that benefits the U.S. Merchant Marine Academy and its Department of Athletics. Flagship Management is a leading consulting firm for maritime executive recruiting and personnel solutions. Flagship Management’s Principals and Associates have over a combined 220 years of practical maritime experience at sea and ashore.

“Flagship is excited to partner with the USMMA Alumni Association and Foundation and the Blue and Gray Golf Classics ” says Tim Green, one of five Principals at Flagship Management and a 1994 graduate of the U.S. Merchant Marine Academy. “These well attended events have become the industry standard and we are happy to give back to the Academy and Midshipman.”

The Flagship Management Blue and Gray Golf Classics will become the new name of the tour, which spans the entire country throughout the year and attracts over 1,500 attendees annually. A new website for the tour will also launch in 2014 and link Flagship Management’s job placement services to the thousands of online users who visit Blueandgraygolf.com each year.

“We are extremely excited to begin the next chapter of the Blue and Gray Golf Classics with Flagship Management carrying our banner,” said Gregg Matalas, AAF Director of Marketing / Blue & Gray. “When we partner with any organization, in any capacity, our goal is to grow together and try to raise a few extra dollars for the Midshipmen. With Flagship Management’s forward-thinking personality, coupled with its vast experience in working in the maritime industry, the USMMA Athletics Department and Midshipmen will continue to benefit from the tour for years to come. We are thankful for their generous commitment and dedication to our cause.”

The Blue & Gray Golf Classics, currently in its final year with long-time Title Sponsor, Heidmar Inc., raise approximately $300,000 a year in net proceeds for the USMMA Department of Athletics. With over a decade long partnership with Heidmar, the Blue & Gray Golf Classics grew from four outings to 11 and from just a few hundred golfers a year to over 1,200. The tour also benefits from a string of over 30 national sponsors, which are responsible for nearly 40% of the tour’s annual revenue. Overall, the events are widely attended by USMMA alumni, parents and members of the maritime industry.

“We can’t thank our generous supporters enough for their dedication to our Academy, the Midshipmen and our Athletics program,” said USMMA Athletics Director Sue Petersen Lubow. “Our needs continue to grow each year and we are thankful that Flagship Management is taking over and helping lead the Blue & Gray Golf Classics into the future. Having started the tour over 20 years ago with just one outing, I am thrilled with the growth we have had and the overwhelming support we receive year-in-and-year-out.”

The 2014 Flagship Management Blue & Gray Golf Classics will begin on March 13, 2014 in Las Vegas at the Desert Pines Golf Club with the annual USMMA Class Challenge developed by Joe Martino ’86. The Class Challenge is an annual Class Reunion contest to see which USMMA Class can be the most represented at the event. Last year, the Class of 1986 championed the Challenge with 17 classmates. It’s expected the Las Vegas event will surpass 100 golfers in 2014 making it one of the most widely attended events on the tour.

The Flagship Management Blue & Gray Golf Classics will stop in 11 cities in 2014: Las Vegas (3/13), Houston (4/9), Fort Lauderdale (5/14), Washington, D.C. (5/19), New York (7/28), San Francisco (TBD), Norfolk (TBD), New Orleans (WorkBoat Show TBD), Baltimore (TBD), Tampa (TBD) and Long Beach (TBD).
