Maritime Happenings

May was a busy month in certain sectors of the industry.  There remains uncertainty in the overall markets, yet employers still have requirements for skilled workers.

With unemployment rates in excess of 10% in many locales there is a shortage of skilled workers.  We are seeing continued demand for engineering and technical experience as well as specialized operational roles.  Job seekers with marine engineering degrees or experience in the tanker markets have been in demand. There is also a strong need for engineering sales professionals in the maritime and offshore sectors, with almost daily new opportunities.

We continue to see a trend with employers taking additional time to review candidates.  The hiring process may involve additional rounds of interviews taking place – phone, Skype, and in person.  Many employers are giving internal talent a closer review often benchmarking against external candidates.

That being said companies still require external hires.  There is always a need for specific skills, new perspectives, and the occasional shake up.  Companies in the maritime industry are no different than other industries in that they often have to go outside their own ranks to fulfill certain requirements.

Stay focused and follow us for the latest opportunities and trends.
